Meta: Announcing advanced AI content enforcement
In 2025, Meta announced they had begun experimenting with significantly more advanced AI systems for content enforcement, and in 2026 the company was ready to share early experimentation results and communicate the company’s intention to reduce reliance on third-party vendors for content enforcement. The team needed to handle this announcement carefully and accurately.
Objective
Communicate Meta’s approach and reasoning for integrating advanced AI systems in the content moderation lifecycle, reducing reliance on third-party vendors, and how human expertise will remain present in the new systems
Challenges
The announcement had to be accurate to how the systems actually worked, understandable to a general audience and balance legal, compliance, and security requirements
Connecting expertise of marketing, legal, and public affairs with subject-matter experts in engineering, design and operations
Product language describing moderation was spread across surfaces and needed to be complementary to the announcement
My role
Design subject matter expert on core team responsible for understanding the in-product messaging concerning content moderation
Audited product language across all Meta surfaces and compiled key decisions and information needed ahead of communication
Coordinated sign-off paths for key terminology and phrasing decisions
Provided actioned feedback to Product Marketing Manager concerning proof points submitted for user research
Reviewed drafts of announcement to ensure consistency, accuracy and balanced tone
